Save the page. Keep every image.
Save any article, recipe, how-to or Reddit thread in one click: the words as a clean text file (Markdown), every picture saved beside it. Read it offline, search it, or paste it into an AI chat, even after the page is gone.
- Unlike Print to PDF Just the content, without the ads and menus, as text you can search and edit.
- Unlike text-only clippers Every image is downloaded, not left as a link. Reddit comments come too.
- Free and open source No account. Nothing you save leaves your computer.
For Chrome. The Chrome Web Store listing is coming soon; today you can download it from this page.
- Works on any page
- Images saved locally
- Nothing leaves your computer
- Open source, MIT
It tells you when it got everything
After every save, a notice at the bottom of the page counts the words and images it kept. If an image couldn't be saved, it says so and links the original instead of dropping it. Open the file, show its folder, or undo, right there.
Nothing leaves your computer
- No account, server or analytics
- SaveMD runs entirely in your browser.
- Your files, on your disk
- Chrome itself writes pages into your Downloads folder.
- Only when you ask
- It reads a page when you click save, and not before.
- Check for yourself
- Every line of code is on GitHub under the MIT license.
Saving guide
Every save lands in Downloads\WebClips as a folder holding the Markdown file, an assets folder of images, and the page as it was.
| When you want to | Do this | You get |
|---|---|---|
| Save a page | Click the SaveMD button, or press Alt+Shift+S | The article, or the whole page when there's no article, with every image |
| Save one part of a page | Right-click the button, then Pick an area to save | Just the part you click |
| Save what you selected | Right-click the page, then Save selection as Markdown | Just the selection |
| Paste into an AI chat | Right-click the button, then Copy page as Markdown | Clean text on your clipboard |
| Keep a Reddit thread | Click the button as usual | The post, its comment threads and their images |
| Read it later | Open in the notice | The file in your usual Markdown app |
On Windows, SaveMD's Options page gives you a one-line command that sends saves to any folder you choose instead.
Install SaveMD
Coming soon Chrome Web Store listing
Until then, download it and add it to Chrome yourself. It takes about two minutes and needs no other software.
- Unzip the download, and move the
savemdfolder somewhere it can stay, such as Documents. Chrome runs SaveMD from that folder. - Open
chrome://extensionsand turn on Developer mode (top right). - Choose Load unpacked, select the
savemdfolder, and pin SaveMD to the toolbar.
Chrome may remind you that a developer-mode extension is on; that's expected for anything installed outside the store. Prefer to build it yourself? The source code is on GitHub.
Questions
Is it really free?
Yes, every feature, with no account. It's open source under the MIT license.
Which apps can open what it saves?
Any app that reads Markdown: Obsidian, Typora, MarkText, VS Code and others. The image links point at the local copies, so pages read offline. Open uses whichever app your computer opens .md files with.
Why not save straight into a folder I pick?
Chrome doesn't let extensions keep access to a folder you choose: it ends as soon as the extension's own window closes. So SaveMD saves through Chrome's downloads, which always works. On Windows, a one-line command from the Options page sends saves to any folder.
Does it work on a Mac?
Saving works the same way, into Downloads/WebClips. Sending saves to another folder is Windows-only for now.
What if a page doesn't save well?
Use Pick an area to save for pages that aren't articles, and please tell us about the page. Each saved folder includes the page as SaveMD saw it, which makes fixing it much easier.
